Teens 4 R.E.A.L.

Teens 4 R.E.A.L. is our community initiative, focused on middle and high school youth across Catawba County. Designed and implemented by the Council's staff for the first time in 2013, we plan to offer this program to teens in our community every summer. R.E.A.L. is an acronym for Relationships, Empowerment, Attitudes, and Life. This program provides youth with pertinent information while going through adolescence. Trained Teen Leaders are recruited across Catawba County and assist the Council's Health Educators to provide the programs. Each camp lasts four hours per day, for four days. The Council partners with local churches from different areas of Catawba County so that we can serve a diverse population of young males and females.

Curriculum is utilized to provide age appropriate, medically accurate, health education programs. Each day focuses on a different teen topic of "R.E.A.L.". Day 1, "Relationships" focuses on how to set boundaries in a relationship, bullying, knowing the difference between good and bad touch, and how to maintain healthy friendships/relationships. Day 2, "Empowerment" involves setting future goals, emphasizing that decisions made as a teen will impact their future, and the importance of avoiding risky behaviors. Day 3, "Attitudes" covers pressures youth may face during adolescence, including: tobacco, alcohol, drugs, breaking laws, and fighting. Day 4, "Life" focuses on how to deal with real teen life situations, such as: grief, trouble with school, loss of family/friends, changes during puberty, and making decisions to have a healthy life now and as an adult. Each day includes nutrition as youth help Teen Leaders and Health Educators prepare healthy snacks, and exercise, as they do group physical activities.
